COVID-19 Testing: We Do It All

Since COVID-19 was first discovered, one of the largest challenges doctors and scientists face is the lack of information, data, and studies on the virus. But as time goes on, different testing approaches have proven useful for detecting the presence of COVID-19 in the body. Thus, allowing patients to better prepare and fight the illness.

Cabot Emergency Hospital offers safe, fast, and effective COVID-19 testing. We have the capabilities for PCR testing, Antibody testing, and Antigen testing, which we describe in detail below. The bottom line is—we can do it all!

If you are not experiencing symptoms and would like to be tested for COVID-19, please contact your primary care provider (PCP) and ask for an outpatient order.  Those seeking testing who are actively experiencing symptoms can seek an order from their PCP or check-in to the ER at Cabot Emergency Hospital.  Testing is available 24/7, every day of the year. PCR

A Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test picks up the presence of viral genetic material. PCR detects the RNA, or the genetic makeup of the virus, which can only be detected if someone is actively infected with the virus. This test can tell whether someone has the virus early on, even if they’re not showing symptoms yet.

The PCR test is beneficial because if someone is positive, they can reach out to the people they have been in contact with and encourage them to self-isolate. Thus, helping to break the transmission chain and prevent further spreading of the virus.

How it’s done: This test uses a nasal swab to collect a sample.  The sample is then processed in our lab and results are given in approximately one hour.

Insurance: PCR testing is covered by most commercial insurances, especially if the person is actively experiencing symptoms. 

Self-Pay Cost: $200

Antigen/PCR Combo

The antigen test consists of an analyzer device and matching test cartridges. Each cartridge encases biological components that show whether or not a sample contains fragments of SARS-CoV-2. By searching for proteins found on the surface of the coronavirus, antigen testing produces results in minutes instead of days.

Due to the novel nature of antigen testing, Cabot Emergency Hospital utilizes PCR testing in conjunction with antigen testing to ensure both rapid results and a high level of accuracy.

How it’s done:   Two nasal swab samples are collected. One swab is used to perform an antigen test, the other swab is used to perform a confirmatory PCR test.  Antigen results are back in approximately 30 minutes.  Confirmatory PCR test results are back in 2-10 days.

Insurance: Antigen/PCR testing is covered by most commercial insurances, especially if the person is actively experiencing symptoms. 

Self-Pay Cost: $300

Antibody

Testing antibodies, also known as serologic testing, shows whether you have had the virus in the past. The Cellex test looks for two types of antibodies, IgG and IgM, which rise as the body mounts an immune reaction to fight off the SARS-COV2 virus. Testing the level of antibodies in someone’s blood is helpful because the antibodies would only be there if the person had been infected with the virus prior to the test.

How it’s done:  A sample of blood is drawn to be tested. Results take about 20 minutes.

Insurance: Antibody testing is covered by most commercial insurances. 

Self-Pay Cost: $200

Symptoms and Signs of COVID-19

Not sure what to look for? Below are the different ways COVID-19 can affect your body. Symptoms can show up anywhere from 2-14 days after exposure, with the majority of people seeing signs within 5-6 days.

The top 7 most common symptoms of COVID-19 include:

7. Mucus of phlegm

Other, less common symptoms of COVID-19 include:

• Sore throat

• Nausea or vomiting

• Chills or shaking

The most serious, “emergency symptoms” of COVID-19 include:

• Trouble breathing
• Constant pain or pressure in your chest
• Sudden confusion
• Blueish colored lips
